Proficient in phlebotomy following proper procedures for drawing. Proficiently collect blood samples on both inpatients and outpatients with a minimal number of failures, patient bruising, or required redraws. Ensure the proper identification of the patient prior to drawing. For inpatients, the patient's wristband will be checked against the orders in hand using two unique identifiers. Additionally, identification will be checked by verbally communicating with the patient and asking the patient the two unique identifiers. For outpatients, verbal communication using two unique identifiers will be checked. The patient identification card will also be checked when the patient has one. Ensure the proper identification of the specimens using two unique identifiers and labeling each specimen in the presence of the patient. Reviews test request orders prior to collecting specimens, determining whether the patient has been properly prepared for the test (fasting, special diet, medication, etc.) Select the correct tube type that is required for the testing ordered. He/she will draw the blood using the correct order of draw for the tubes. Hold pressure after venipuncture and ensure bleeding has stopped prior to dressing the venipuncture site. Productivity will be required to remain at a minimum ten patients draws per hour. Promptly respond to STAT draws. STAT draws will be addressed immediately and the incumbent will go to the patient, draw the blood and return to the laboratory within 15 minutes of the request. All stats will be delivered directly to the laboratory. Notify the physician when he/she has been unable to obtain blood from a patient. STAT blood draws in Outpatient Phlebotomy may also be needed. Deliver those specimens to the laboratory directly after the draw. Make every effort to get a physician to place orders for outpatients that appear for an appointment and have no orders in the computer. Responsible for the delivery of bloods and urine specimens from Outpatient Phlebotomy. Deliveries should be made minimally every hour. Adheres to safety, infection control, and universal precautions at all times while drawing blood. This includes such things as wearing gloves and using needle protection devices. Provides initial aid when a patient has a reaction to the phlebotomy procedure and will call for emergency response when serious reaction or emergency conditions exist. Responsible for monitoring the collection of urine specimens from patients as part of the pain management program. Secure the collection restroom by removing any items that could be used for adulteration (soap, etc.), adding bluing tables to the toilet water and shutting off the water supply. Further, the incumbent will ask the patient to remove all items from his/ her pockets and remove any coats, hats or other outerwear and instructs the patient not to take any bags or purses into the collection room. Responsible for notifying the patient's provider if any suspicious activity has been observed with the collection of the specimen. Responsible for all types of laboratory specimens during the entire preanalytical phase which is the most critical phase and the most prone to error. Receives phlebotomy requests utilizing both manual and computerized logging methods. Instructs patients on proper specimen collection techniques and provides patients with all necessary specimen collection equipment and containers. Utilize VISTA, CPRS or HOWDY to look up patient's orders and Accession the orders and prints patient labels. Ensure that the labels have the correct patient name and unique number on them prior to using the labels. He/ she will ensure all specimens are properly labeled and identified throughout the entire specimen procurement process to maintain specimen integrity. He/ she is responsible for proper preparation of samples for testing in the various clinical laboratory sections, such as labeling, centrifugation, decanting, aliquoting, etc. Some specimens may need to be frozen or kept at room temperature during transportation. He/ she provides information, guidance and technical advice to physicians and clinic personnel on specimen collection and submission. Work Schedule:

The position primarily involves work performed in both sitting and standing positions. Standing and bending for a prolonged period of time, walking, lifting up to 20 pounds, kneeling, and some climbing of stairs is required. Experience:
Applicant must possess six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience at the next lower grade level in the federal government (GS-3) to fully qualify for this position. General experience is experience performing any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized experience (which should be documented on your resume) is:
technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking); preparing reports of findings; and technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. Experience:
Perform phlebotomy in the emergency department, intensive care unit and on patient wards, collects blood samples by venipuncture and correctly labels all blood tubes, processes laboratory orders and instructs patients on proper specimen collection procedures, Correct selection of collection tubes is required. Specimens must be collected properly and in adequate quantity for accurate analysis, validates, processes and distributes specimens to the proper laboratory section for testing. patient identification on the tube is correct, accessioning the specimens, proper action for the specimen and distribution to the proper section for testing. -OR- EDUCATION:
You must have successful completion of (a) an associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year's duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; (b) 1 year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of the training course as described above or (c) 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled.
